Activities

Events

The main activities organized by the Belgian chapter are the events. We aim to present three a year. In addition to meetings that are of professional interest, we also hold social events for members.

Conference

On October 19, 2000 STC Belgium organized the first conference on technical communication to be held in Belgium. With more than 200 attendants, this conference was enormously successful.

A participant wrote:

"For many of us, working as technical communicators means facing the ongoing challenge of educating our colleagues about what we do, and showing them the value we bring to our organizations. As we all know, this is not always easy, as our profession is still young and evolving.

The recent Belgian STC conference was therefore an important experience for many attending, as it marked the first time in their professional lives that they were surrounded by a large number of technical communications professionals. In my conversations with those who took part, I found that they benefited in several ways:

  • Professional pride: Attending an STC event is a great way to learn first-hand about the depth and breadth of the technical communications profession. For those attendees who are relatively new in the profession, the Belgian conference was therefore especially impressive.
  • Esprit de corps: Several people that I spoke to had never realized that many others experience the typical triumphs, trials and tribulations of the technical communicator within their organizations. It is always gratifying to learn that none of us is alone, and that we can learn from one another.
  • Coming of age: The success of the conference points to the growth of the technical communication profession in Belgium, and encourages us all to continue working to advance it.

I came away from the conference with renewed enthusiasm, and look forward to helping the Belgian chapter build on its success."
